“Paranormal Activity” Horror Film Franchise to Go Latino With New Spinoff

“Paranormal Activity 4” may have made $30 million dollars at the domestic box office this weekend, but Latino fans, there’s much more in store for you with the news that Paramount has just given the popular series its very own Latino spinoff.

The horror series – which has spawned four films, with a fifth in the works – will soon include a spinoff featuring a Latino cast, reports Deadline.com. The film will also be filmed partially in Spanish; a clear nod to the Latino audience which has helped rake in over $576 million worldwide for the franchise.

The film franchise began in 2007 and featured the story of a young couple who encounter a supernatural, “paranormal” presence in their home. The Latino spinoff is expected to hit theaters as early as Spring 2013, reports Deadline.com.

According to the LA Times, Paramount’s movie theater exit data shows that Latino movie goers comprise nearly a third of all “Paranormal Activity” ticket purchasers – a statistic which exceeds “the horror genre’s average attendance by Latinos, which ranges from 20% to 25%.”

“They [Latinos] are the most open to the idea that there is something out there and engage in the stories in a way that no other audience connects to it,” Adam Goodman, president of the Paramount Film Group, told the LA Times of the Latino draw to the “Paranormal Activity” franchise. “They are one of our most critical audiences, but they are also our harshest critics. They can be the most disappointed, and the most vocal.”
