Calle 13 has never been one to remain silent on societal issues. They’ve spoken out about everything from human trafficking to politics to education, and some of their best work is heavily laden with sharp (and piercing) opinion.
And now it looks as though education is going to get a boost thanks to the Latin-Grammy winning alt-hip-hop group.
According to People en Español, stepbrothers René Pérez and Eduardo Cabra are set to end the Puerto Rican leg of their Entren los que quieran tour soon. But instead of taking a break (which is much-deserved), Calle 13 is going to present an educative plan to the Puerto Rico governor and San Juan mayoress.
Further down the line, the group plans on developing a plan of action for the eventual creation of a school in La Perla, located in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. La Perla is located along the Atlantic coast and, because of its secluded location, has a notorious reputation for illegal activity.
Calle 13 already have a song with the town’s same name, which they recorded with salsa singer Rubén Blades.
“What’s going on in Puerto Rico is terribly sad – all the violence,” the singer said, suggesting that prioritizing education would be a long-term and effective plan to help.
Kudos to Calle 13 for not only voicing their message through their music, but jumping a step further into action. We look forward to hearing more about the plan for the school.
