Johnny Depp to Bring “Don Quixote” to Theaters

Johnny Depp has brought a number of whimsical characters to the big screen – think the Mad Hatter in “Alice and Wonderland” and Willy Wonka in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” – but it looks like his next big project will have a decidedly Latin flavor with the news that Disney has just signed off on a film he intends to produce about Spanish hidalgo Don Quixote.

Depp – who is affiliated with production company Infinitum Nihil, managed by his sister Christi Dembrowski – pitched the  Don Quixote film as a “modern re-imagining” of the classic tale, reports Deadline.

According to the industry site, the 49-year-old has “long been intrigued” by the idea of a re-telling featuring the Spanish character, who appears in the 17th century novel “El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha” by Miguel de Cervantes.

The last time the tale of Don Quixote was brought to mainstream audiences was in 2000, with a made-for-TV film starring John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini. by  [NBC]
