Spanish Woman Sells Organs to Pay Rent

Sure, the global economy has seen better days, but selling your internal organs to make rent sounds like the plot of a bad television show. For one unemployed Spanish woman, however, this is her last stitch effort to support herself and her daughter in order to make ends meet.

“I’ve got nothing. The only thing I have are my organs,” stated the 44-year-old woman who has not been identified by name according to Huffington Post. “I first offered a kidney for sale, and now I also offer my corneas, one of my lungs, a piece of my liver… I’ll sell whatever organ of my body to whoever can pay.” So far, there have been no takers.

Currently, Spain is in the midst of its second recession over the span of only three years. With a 25 percent unemployment rate and an economy that is not expected to grow until 2014, many Spanish citizens are going to extreme measures to keep themselves from being evicted including committing suicide and, apparently, organ sales.

As a result of the tragic economic downturn and the drastic measures people are taking to escape eviction, Spanish banks recently announced their plan to halt some evictions that face homeowners who are unable to pay their mortgages. We can only hope the economy will soon take a turn for the better, for everyone’s sake. [Latina]
